How to create a UK invoice in three steps

  1. Add your business details, customer details and a unique invoice number.
  2. Add line items, quantities, unit prices and the correct VAT rate (20%, 5% or 0%).
  3. Check the preview, then print or save as PDF. You can also copy a share link or save a draft.

What a full UK VAT invoice needs

  • A unique, sequential invoice number
  • The date the invoice was issued and the time of supply
  • Your business name, address and VAT registration number (if VAT registered)
  • The customer's name and address
  • A clear description of the goods or services
  • The quantity or extent of the supply
  • The unit price, the VAT rate and the amount before VAT
  • The total amount before VAT, the total VAT and the total including VAT
  • Any cash discount rate offered

If you are not VAT registered, you must not charge VAT or show a VAT number. The tool works for non-VAT invoices too — simply leave the VAT number blank and choose 0% where appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. The invoice generator is free to use and does not require an account. The page may display ads in future, but the tool itself stays free.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. Calculations and PDF creation happen in your browser. Drafts are saved in your browser's local storage unless you clear them. Share links encode the invoice data in the URL fragment, which is not sent to the server.

Can I use this invoice outside the UK?

The default fields follow UK VAT invoice requirements. The same fields work well for many other countries, but always check local rules for VAT/GST and invoice requirements.

Do I need to be VAT registered to use it?

No. You can create a normal invoice with no VAT number and 0% VAT. Only VAT-registered businesses should charge VAT.

How do I save the invoice as a PDF?

Click “Print / PDF”. In the print dialog choose “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”). The form is hidden automatically and only the invoice is printed.
